A chemical peel is a non-surgical technique designed to revitalise damaged skin in which there are signs of sun damage, fine lines, wrinkles, uneven skin, mild acne and scarring. The peel aims to resurface the skin resulting in a smoother, softer look. A Chemical peel is most commonly performed as a stand alone procedure to enhance skin appearance and vitality. However, it is also often performed in conjunction with or before other treatments such as a face lift.

The active component of a chemical peel is an acid of which there are several possibilities for chemical peels. The application of the acidic solution causes the superficial layers of skin cells to peel away. When the layers regrow the skin is usually smoother and less wrinkled than the old skin. Additionally, this may have an effect on re-establishing the fine capillary network damaged by ultra violet radiation resulting in sallowness. This benefit can be seen as a restoration of healthy skin tone and texture and resolution of skin blemishes. David Mowatt uses the "Obaji Blue Peel" system, a TCA (trichloroacetic acid) peel which can be performed in the out patient setting. Application of the TCA solution causes a warming or mild burning sensation which lasts for a few minutes. The peel may require pre-treatment with an advanced skin care product and it is essential to use high factor sun protection for several months following the treatment. Repeat treatment to optomise and/or maintain results may be required.
